Home and business owners in NSW have woken today to a brand new program to incentivise the installation of battery storage systems. Commonly referred to as the ‘NSW Battery Rebate’, the program opens for applications today. The incentive will see discounts on the cost of a new battery installation up to $2,400. Let’s take a look at who can apply and how the program will assist New South Wales in reducing peak demand as we move towards a cleaner future.
What is the NSW battery rebate and who can apply?
The new battery incentive is NOT a rebate. Eligible customers will not need to wait for a return of funds. Instead, homes and businesses will see a discount on the purchase price of the battery. The incentive is available in two discount brackets:
- Discount between $770 and $1150 when you install a new 6.5 kWh battery
- Discount between $1600 and $2400 when you install a new 13.5 kWh battery
The discount will be determined by the size of the battery being installed. To be eligible, the battery must be between 2 and 28 kWh.
To apply, you must be installing a new battery on your home or small business. The installer must be accredited or partnered with an accredited supplier. Please note that homes without solar or a battery may be eligible to receive a discount on the battery component of a solar and battery storage system installation.
Please refer to the NSW battery incentive page for full eligibility criteria and information.
What batteries are eligible for the incentive?
There are a number of eligible batteries that meet the criteria set out by the NSW government. These batteries meet the warranty and performance standards required for the program. Your installer will provide a list of batteries for your home or business.
It is important to note that homes with existing solar will require a compatible inverter. Again, your installer will guide you on this.
How can I apply?
There are 4 key steps for the application, approval, and installation of your battery under the NSW battery incentive:
- Choose an accredited installer
- Select an eligible battery
- Complete the paperwork to nominate your installer
- Install the battery
Your installer will receive the incentive and pass on the discount. The discount will be reflected on the purchase and installation price of your battery system.

How the NSW battery incentive will help reduce peak demand
The new battery incentive from the New South Wales government is a vital step in reducing peak demand on the electricity grid. By encouraging households to install battery storage, the initiative allows excess solar power generated during the day to be stored for use during high-demand evening hours. This approach reduces reliance on the grid at peak times, easing strain on the network and lowering the risk of blackouts. The shift also supports the transition to a more sustainable energy system, as it enables households to maximise their use of renewable energy, cutting down on emissions and supporting NSW’s broader energy goals.
