How to Choose the Right Size of BESS?

There are two related terms – Energy Storage and BESS. Both work in a similar way, but BESS has more advanced functionalities.

Steps to Choose the Right Size:

  1. Determine your power requirement – Identify how many watts/kW of load you need to run.
  2. For new buildings – Prepare a list of appliances with their power consumption.
  3. For existing buildings – Use a clamp meter to measure household loads.

For example, if your total power consumption is 30kW, you can then decide how many hours of backup you need. Generally, the standard backup time for energy storage/BESS is 2 to 4 hours. If you need more backup, the system configuration will be adjusted accordingly. In this case, your storage battery capacity would be 75kWh, and your system size would be 30kW / 75kWh.

Major Applications of Energy Storage / BESS

India has electricity available in most places for 24 hours. However, during the summer season, frequent power cuts of 2 to 4 hours occur in various sectors, including residential, commercial, and industrial areas.

Currently, different sectors are choosing different energy storage sizes:

  • Residential sector – 5kW / 10kWh
  • Commercial sector – 30kW / 60kWh
  • Common applications – Hospitals, schools, petrol pumps, restaurants, hotels, real estate projects, offices, and banks.

How Much Does Energy Storage / BESS Cost?

BESS is a reliable power backup solution that uses hybrid inverters and lithium batteries. The cost of energy storage per kWh is around ₹30,000 to ₹40,000*, including both the inverter and battery. The final cost depends on factors such as battery technology, capacity, internal components, lifespan, and more.

What Appliances Can Run on Energy Storage / BESS?

There are two types of appliances:

  1. Heavy power-consuming appliances – Lifts, duct ACs, water motors, industrial machines.
  2. Normal power-consuming appliances – Lights, fans, ACs, computers, refrigerators.

The inverter/PCS/rectifier is responsible for running appliances, while the battery provides backup. To ensure smooth operation during power cuts, an inverter with 30-40% higher capacity than the running load is recommended.
