In episode 4 of Energy Matters, James Treble took viewers inside the real-life journey of Bruce, a long-time Melbourne resident determined to ditch gas and future-proof his family home. What made his electrification story remarkable wasn’t just the outcome, it was how easy it turned out to be with the right help.

Thanks to Momentum Energy and their energy solutions partner, Goodbye Gas, Bruce’s home is now more efficient and cheaper to run.

Let’s take a look at how it all unfolded.

A very Melbourne makeover: Bruce’s electrification journey

Bruce’s story started in Donvale, in a solid 40-plus-year-old home cherished for decades. While he wasn’t the home’s first owner, he has certainly made it his own, living there for over 40 years. With solar panels added more than a decade ago and a battery system installed recently, Bruce was already thinking ahead. But one thing remained – gas.

Originally, Bruce’s home ran on gas for cooking, ducted heating, and hot water. And like many Australians, he was keen to get rid of gas – both to save money and do his bit for the planet. The issue? Going electric felt like a logistical nightmare.

Electrifying an older home isn’t always straightforward. It can involve an army of trades – think plumbers, electricians, plasterers, air con installers – the lot. And Bruce, while willing, didn’t know where to start. Coordinating everything himself felt like more hassle than it was worth.

That’s when Momentum Energy and Goodbye Gas stepped in.

Bruce enlisted the help of Momentum Energy and their Goodbye Gas partnership. With Goodbye Gas managing the entire process, Bruce finally made the switch. His gas appliances were replaced with a heat pump hot water system and an induction cooktop (a big hit with the wife!). What stood out the most? The simplicity. All the trades worked together seamlessly, and Bruce didn’t have to lift a finger. With no more need for gas, the home’s gas meter was completely removed. As a Momentum Energy customer, Bruce and his family celebrated the milestone with the gas meter abolishment fee completely covered with a credit on their final gas bill.

About Goodbye Gas: How it works

Lisa Chiba, Managing Director of Momentum Energy, provided some further insight into Goodbye Gas and how it works.

Momentum Energy’s partner, Goodbye Gas, helps Victorian households swap their gas appliances for electric alternatives, without the drama. It’s not just about the appliances, it’s about making the whole process accessible and streamlined.

It all kicks off with a personalised consultation. Goodbye Gas works with you to understand your home’s setup, your goals, and which appliances might need replacing. From there, they develop a custom electrification plan tailored to your needs and budget. Whether you’re ready to go all-in or want to electrify your home in stages, they’ll map out the right path for you.

Goodbye Gas handles everything, from sourcing the right energy-efficient appliances and finding available rebates to coordinating skilled tradespeople. You don’t need to juggle quotes or wrangle trades’ schedules. Goodbye Gas does it for you.

And there’s a handy financial bonus too. If you purchase a product from Goodbye Gas, you’re a Momentum Energy gas customer, and you decide to go fully electric, Momentum will cover the gas meter abolishment fee of up to $251.90 (incl. GST) on your final gas bill.

Each appliance switch reduces your running costs. In fact, Rewiring Australia estimates that an all-electric home with rooftop solar could slash energy bills from $5,300 to around $1,850 a year. That’s some serious savings. So, if you’ve been putting off your electrification plans because it all seems too overwhelming, it might be time to revisit them. It might be simpler than you think.
