TOPCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact) technology is the trending solar cell technology which aims at increasing the solar panel efficiency. The solar industry is witnessing rapid advancements in technology aimed towards achieving higher efficiency and better performance of solar components. The TOPCon technology also targets achieving higher efficiency in solar cells. It is touted to becoming the next big thing in the solar industry and its market share is expected to grow rapidly in the near future.

Why TOPCon technology?

The TOPCon technology aims at reaching higher efficiencies because the limits of PERC cells have been reached. According to the latest NREL report, TopCon solar cells have achieved up to 28% conversion efficiencies, which is higher than that of traditional solar cells. The technology works by reducing electron recombination at the surface with the help of passivated contacts resulting in the improvement of the cell’s overall efficiency. Often, silicon dioxide, is used as an insulating material, to lower energy losses. Also, TOPCon cells have TopCon cells have rear-side contacts, to increase light absorption and energy yield and belongs to the N-type cells.

The primary difference between MonoPERC cells and TOPCon is that MonoPerc cells have passivated contacts on the front side, while TopCon has passivated contacts on the rear side. TopCon cells also generally have higher efficiencies compared to MonoPERC cells.
