Australia’s energy sector has had some large players for quite some time. For centuries, gas and coal have been the predominant means of powering our country and economy. One of our nation’s largest energy producers, Origin, is a household name and one that pops to mind when you think of electricity and gas. With Australia’s push to a future with renewable energy at the fore, Origin is shifting its focus and resources to ensuring that Aussies have access to reliable energy whilst innovating with the latest technology and services.

Origin’s part in the road to renewables

While we all participate in Australia’s transition to clean energy, the energy industry’s role should never be understated. Origin has taken hold of the mission and is steaming ahead with investing and educating. Solar and wind power are two of the focus areas with heavy investments in large-scale renewable energy projects. On a residential scale, Origin has implemented programs to aid Australian homes in taking control of their energy production and usage. Let’s take a look at some of the initiatives that your home can participate in.

Origin Loop VPP: Powering your home and your neighbourhood

Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) encourage homeowners to add battery storage to their homes whilst providing opportunities to turn their stored energy into additional cash flow. Households that connect a battery to an approved VPP may also be eligible for government rebates, such as the SA REPS program. Origin Loop VPP adds extra incentives for those who already have a compatible battery or who wish to purchase one.

If you’re an Origin electricity customer and already have a compatible battery1, an attractive sign-on bonus awaits, plus $1 for every kWh of electricity sent to the grid during Origin Loop events2. These events will still leave most batteries3 with at least approx. 20 per cent capacity. Your regular feed-in tariff will remain untouched, meaning this is an additional way to earn money from the excess electricity generated by your solar panels and stored in your battery. The electricity taken from your battery during an Origin Loop event is delivered to the grid during times of peak demand. You’ll have full visibility of how much energy is being taken via the Origin app.

VPPs are an important component of our shift away from fossil fuels. Steady and reliable electricity is achieved when peak times are countered with electricity generated by the sun fed into the grid from storage. This means that we can achieve grid stability [later in the day] even when the sun isn’t shining. Smart energy management is but one way that Origin is leading the charge to a clean energy future.

Power up your Tesla Electric Vehicle with Origin EV Power Up

If you’re one of the over 100,000 Tesla EV owners in Australia, you’ll want to hear how you can fully charge your EV for less than $54!

Origin EV Power Up allows eligible Origin customers to charge their compatible Tesla at the super-low rate of 8c/kWh. This could see savings of up to $378 per year5 compared to standard charging rates. Origin EV Power Up will take care of the charging for you – using Origin Loop smarts to charge your EV when renewable energy is more readily available – rewarding you with  low rates. All you have to do is plug in the charger, set your charge-ready time in the Origin App, and they’ll take care of the rest for you.

Origin EV Power Up is free to access for Origin customers on eligible residential electricity plans. The savings will be reflected as a credit on your next bill following your usage.

With the high cost of petrol and diesel, saving even more with your Tesla EV has never been more attractive.

Find out more and read the full terms and conditions by visiting Origin EV Power Up. Details regarding the Origin EV Power Up program were correct at the time of publishing.

Get rewarded with Origin Spike

What could be better than reducing your electricity usage? Being rewarded for doing so! Origin customers who sign up for Origin Spike can enjoy rewards, such as PayPal cash or gift cards, by simply reducing their energy usage during Spike events.

Customers signed up to Origin Spike will receive an SMS notifying them of an upcoming SpikeHour challenge. This challenge will involve lowering your energy usage during the hour, compared to your average energy usage. When you beat your 10-day energy average, you earn Spike currency called Watts. You can redeem Watts for PayPal cash or gift cards from various retailers like Kmart, Myer, Woolies, and Bunnings to help you save even more!

Origin Spike is a fantastic and free way for Origin customers to lower their environmental impact and be rewarded!

Find out more about Origin Spike and read the full terms and conditions.

Imagine reaping the benefits of battery storage without having a physical battery installed in your home! This is the reality for residents participating in Community Battery Trials in the Ausgrid, Energex, Endeavour and Essential Energy networks via Origin.

Residents in eligible trial locations, with or without solar, can receive up to 4kWh of energy to use at night or on cloudy days. This is a saving of up to $259.20 a year6 on electricity!

Origin leading the way with innovative programs for Aussies

Transitioning away from fossil fuels is possible when the industries involved actively decide to help forge a way for us. Origin is doing just that with accessible programs for Australian residents. Aussies can lower their emissions whilst saving money, whether it be earning great returns from your solar battery, being rewarded with Origin Spike, or saving on your Tesla EV charging, you can enjoy the many benefits of Origin’s innovation.
