As renewable energy becomes more popular, Australians are looking for new ways to reduce their energy costs and carbon footprints. One innovative solution is the Virtual Power Plant (VPP), and the Origin Loop VPP is a key player in this field. But what exactly is Origin Loop, and why should you consider joining it?
In this blog, we’ll explore how the Origin Loop VPP works and why it could benefit your household.
What is a Virtual Power Plant (VPP)?
A VPP is a network of connected devices, like solar and battery systems, that work together like a traditional power plant. Instead of being in a centralised location, the power generation is spread across many homes and businesses.
In a VPP, solar panels generate electricity, and excess energy is stored in home batteries. When the electricity grid needs more power, the stored energy is fed back into the grid. This helps stabilise the grid during peak demand and can reduce the need for fossil fuel power.
The best part? Homeowners are rewarded for their participation by getting paid for the energy they share with the grid.
How does Origin Loop work?
Origin Loop is Origin’s Virtual Power Plant. Signing up to the BYO Battery offer allows customers with solar and a compatible battery system to join a connected network. Here’s how it works:
- Installation of solar and battery: You first need to install solar panels and a battery system that works with Origin Loop.
- Connection to the Origin Loop network: Once your system is set up, Origin connects your battery to the Origin Loop network. This lets Origin monitor and control your battery when necessary.
- Participation in the VPP: During periods of high demand on the electricity grid, Origin may draw energy from your battery. This energy supports the grid and helps reduce the load on other power sources. You receive credits on your Origin electricity account for the energy your battery provides – $1/kWh1. Your battery will be left with around 20% battery storage at a minimum, with a maximum of 200kWh exported per year.
- Maximise your solar usage: When your solar panels produce more electricity than you need, the extra energy is stored in your battery. Normally, this would only benefit you when you use that energy at home. But with Origin Loop, you also help the wider grid and see energy cost savings in the process.
The Origin Loop network also includes hot water heat pumps, EV chargers and customers connected to Spike, an energy-saving rewards program.
Why should you sign up to the Origin Loop BYO Battery offer?
Now that you know how it works, why should you join?
- Reduce your power bills: One of the main reasons to join Origin Loop is the potential for savings. When you join the VPP, you receive credits on your electricity bills for energy exported from your battery. This can help offset your electricity costs.
Additionally, being part of Origin Loop means you get more value from your solar and battery system. Instead of simply storing energy for later use, you can make your excess energy work for you. This will reduce the payback period for your battery investment.
- Support the grid and reduce reliance on fossil fuels: When you join Origin Loop, you contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable energy grid. By exporting stored solar energy to the grid, you help reduce reliance on coal and gas during periods of high demand.
Your energy helps power homes and businesses with renewable electricity instead of fossil fuels.
- Improve grid stability and prevent blackouts: During extreme weather or when electricity demand spikes, the grid can struggle to cope. This sometimes results in power outages. By participating in Origin Loop, your battery’s stored energy helps stabilise the grid. It can help reduce the chances of blackouts and ensure a reliable power supply.
- No extra effort or maintenance: Origin Loop is fully automated. Once your battery is connected to the Loop, everything works behind the scenes. Origin monitors and manages the system, so you don’t need to do anything extra. Your solar and battery system will still work as usual, with the added benefit of earning you extra money when the grid needs support.
- No fees or lock-in contracts: Origin Loop is free to join and participate in. You are free to exit Origin Loop at any time and will not be subject to exit fees.
You’ll be able to monitor every Loop event via the Origin app. Please refer to Origin’s terms and conditions for further information.
Is your battery compatible with Origin Loop?
Not all batteries are compatible with Origin Loop. To join the program, you need a battery system that can communicate with the Loop network. The good news is that Origin provides a list of compatible battery systems on its website. Some popular brands include Tesla, LG, and Sungrow.
How do you get started with Origin Loop?
Getting started is simple. You can leave your details on the Origin website, and if it looks like you’re eligible, you’ll get a call back within two business days.
You are eligible to join Origin Loop if you:
- Have a compatible solar battery and inverter installed at your residence.
- Have a fully operational solar system with a capacity of at least 5kW, compatible with your solar battery.
- Are an existing Origin electricity customer or are willing to sign up for an electricity plan with Origin, and agree to the Origin Loop VPP Terms and Conditions.
- Have a reliable and continuous internet connection.
- Reside in NSW, SA, VIC, QLD, or the ACT.
Please note that if you or anyone in your household relies on life support equipment, you will not be eligible to join Origin Loop.
