Not all heat pumps are created equal. Here’s what really matters when choosing the right one for your home:
1. Efficiency (STCs = Running Cost Savings)
The more STCs (Small-scale Technology Certificates) a heat pump qualifies for, the more efficient it is. More efficiency = lower energy bills.
2. Heating Speed (Recovery Rate)
A heat pump that takes too long to heat water can be frustrating. Look at the litres per hour rating—faster heating means you won’t run out of hot water after back-to-back showers.
3. Tank Size (How Big Should You Go?)
- 1-2 people → 150L
- 3-4 people → 270-300L
- 5+ people → 315-400L
Going too small = running out of hot water. Going too big = wasting energy heating unused water.
4. Split vs. All-in-One Systems
-
Split System (e.g. Reclaim, Sanden)
✅ Quieter
✅ More efficient
✅ Longer-lasting -
All-in-One (e.g. iStore, Evoheat)
✅ Smaller footprint
✅ Easier and cheaper to install
5. Warranty & Longevity
A heat pump should last at least 10-15 years. Look for:
- 5+ years on the compressor
- 10+ years on the tank
6. Noise Levels
Good heat pumps operate between 37-50 decibels—about the same as a quiet fridge. If noise is a concern, go for a split system over an all-in-one.
