From 1 July 2025, NSW households will see a major shift in battery incentives. The upfront NSW battery rebate is ending, but NSW residents are set to save even more. The federal government is stepping in with a generous rebate, the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, and NSW is doubling down with a boost to its Virtual Power Plant (VPP) payments. Here’s how much you could save.

Federal rebate: Save up to 30% off your battery

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program from the Australian Government commences 1 July and offers up to 30% off the cost of a new battery. This rebate applies nationwide, including in NSW, and aims to ease the upfront cost of going solar-plus-storage.

Example: If a 10 kWh battery system costs $10,000, the federal rebate could save you up to $3,000.

NSW VPP incentive: Up to $1,500 for participating

From 1 July, the NSW VPP battery incentive will increase. When you connect your battery to a participating Virtual Power Plant, you’ll be eligible for a one-off payment based on battery size.

Example: The payment for a 10 kWh battery is expected to be around $560 (based on the published example on the NSW government website of ~$1,500 for 27 kWh).

Total savings: Federal + NSW incentive

Here’s what a household could save by installing a 10 kWh battery after 1 July:

  • Federal rebate: up to $3,000
  • NSW VPP incentive: around $560
  • Total potential savings: ~$3,560

Why act now?

These combined incentives make it one of the best times for NSW households to install a battery. You’ll not only reduce your reliance on the grid and lower your energy bills, but you’ll also be contributing to a cleaner, more resilient energy future.

What to do next

  • Speak with an accredited battery installer and get free quotes. Don’t wait for 1 July, installation availability for 2025 is already filling up. The federal rebate will reduce on 1 January 2026 – act now to secure your spot.
  • Ensure your battery of choice is VPP-compatible

Energy Matters has the tools you need to help you with the next step. Request FREE quotes from our installer network, and you’ll be contacted by up to 3 local installers who will provide you with no-obligation quotes. We also recommend checking out our Recommended Products to find a battery that best suits your needs.
