Yes — the solar battery rebate in Australia in 2025 is very much alive and kicking. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program kicked off on 1 July 2025, offering homeowners, small businesses, and community groups a generous ~30% discount on the upfront cost of solar battery installations. This incentive marks a game-changing moment for those eyeing battery storage.

Ready to seize this opportunity? Energy Matters urges you to act now—connect with accredited solar installers and start saving on power bills today!

Overview of the Solar Battery Rebate Australia 2025

  • The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program was launched on 1 July 2025 via the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES).
  • It offers up to 30% reduction on upfront costs, capped at roughly $330–$372 per usable kWh after fees.
  • Coverage applies to batteries between 5 kWh and 100 kWh nominal, with rebates calculated based on the first 50 kWh of usable capacity.

Who’s eligible for the rebate?

A wide range of individuals and organisations can benefit:

  • Homeowners, including landlords/occupiers, who pair a new or existing rooftop solar system with an eligible battery.
  • Small businesses and community facilities (e.g. libraries, sports clubs).
  • No means test—open to all who meet technical and installation rules.

System requirements include:

  • Solar battery storage of 5–100 kWh nominal capacity; rebate covers up to 50 kWh of usable capacity.
  • Battery and inverter must appear on the Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved list.
  • Install by an accredited installer (Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA)-accredited).
  • System must be paired with solar PV; on-grid systems must be Virtual Power Plants (VPP)-capable (though actual participation is optional).
  • Off-grid systems can qualify if located ≥ 1 km from the grid or if the grid-connection costs exceed $30,000.
  • Batteries installed before 1 July 2025 may still be eligible if not activated until on/after that date, and certification (CoC) is dated on or after 1 July.

The system must be paired with solar PV; on-grid systems need to be Virtual Power Plants (VPP)-capable, although participation remains optional.

Use Energy Matters’ easy-to-use solar power and battery storage calculator to determine the size of your solar system with storage! Our solar calculator will generate performance information and potential savings.

Virtual Power Plants: A new path to savings

Beyond rebates and loans, participating in a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) has emerged as a major new way to save money and get more value from your solar battery. A VPP links a network of household batteries to act as a single power station, providing stored energy back to the grid during peak demand times. This helps to stabilise the grid and reduces the need for fossil fuel power plants.

In return for participating, households receive financial compensation, which can include upfront payments, bill credits, or even higher feed-in tariffs. With many new solar batteries required to be VPP-capable to qualify for federal incentives, it’s a smart move to consider joining a program to accelerate your payback period. Many energy retailers and aggregators now offer VPP programs with compelling financial incentives.

Can you stack federal rebates with state battery incentives?

Yes, but this varies by region:

  • Western Australia: Federal rebate stacks with WA Home Battery Scheme, offering up to $5,000–$7,500, depending on battery size.
  • NSW: The previous state rebate ended 30 June 2025, but NSW VPP incentives remain available and can be combined with the federal rebate.
  • Victoria (VIC) & Northern Territory (NT): VIC’s loan/subsidy program closed; only the federal rebate is available. NT still applies its state scheme alongside the federal rebate.
  • ACT: Federal rebate can be paired with loans or other energy support under the ACT Sustainable Household Scheme.

The installation and application process

Applying for a solar battery rebate in Australia 2025 is typically a straightforward process handled by your accredited installer. They will assess your eligibility, provide a quote that incorporates the rebate, and submit the necessary documentation to the relevant government bodies. This streamlined process ensures you receive the upfront discount directly on your invoice.

It is crucial to work with a reputable installer who is familiar with all the federal and state-based programs. They can help you navigate the eligibility requirements and ensure that your system is compliant, giving you peace of mind and confidence in your investment.

Seize the opportunity in 2025

Solar battery incentives in Australia have never been more comprehensive than they are in 2025. With a new national rebate and continuing state-based schemes, the financial barriers to energy storage are significantly lower. This is the perfect time to take control of your energy bills and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Don’t delay your savings. Contact Energy Matters today to explore how you can leverage these valuable rebates and get free customised solar quotes for a new solar battery system.
