Maryland-based solar contractor Got Electric recently donated 127 surplus solar panels to Habitat for Humanity through the organization’s partnership GiveSolar.

The panels, already delivered to Athens, Georgia, will be installed on the Athens Area Habitat for Humanity ReStore. This initiative will reduce operating costs for the ReStore, allowing Habitat to direct more resources toward its mission of building affordable housing for families in need.

The collaboration grew from a simple conversation between Got Electric’s Andy Hershberger and GiveSolar’s Director, Jeff Heie. Recognizing the opportunity to repurpose surplus equipment, Hershberger coordinated the donation to advance renewable energy access while helping reduce inventory.

“We are honored to support Habitat for Humanity Virginia and GiveSolar in their mission to bring affordable housing and renewable energy together,” said Andy Hershberger, Director of Virginia Operations of Got Electric. “By donating these solar panels, we’re not only reducing waste but also helping Habitat lower their energy expenses so more funds can go directly toward building homes for families who need them most.”

“This donation is a great example of how surplus solar equipment can be redirected to make a real difference in local communities,” said Jeff Heie, Director of GiveSolar. “With support from companies like Got Electric, Habitat for Humanity can expand its impact providing both affordable housing and the benefits of clean, renewable energy.”

The donated panels were delivered by Estes Express Lines and unloaded with the help of volunteers and equipment at the Athens ReStore.
