Many consumers are looking for power backup solutions to address frequent power outages. Typically, these consumers belong to commercial sectors such as offices, hospitals, restaurants, showrooms, schools, hostels, hotels, large residential buildings, and more. There are two main options: generators or energy storage systems. Both solutions have their own advantages and disadvantages, and after analyzing various factors, consumers choose the power backup solution that best suits their needs.

One of our customers operates a dental clinic in Yadgir, Karnataka. When he contacted us, he mentioned that he wanted a power backup solution because power cuts occurred frequently during working hours. Initially, he considered installing a generator, as it seemed easier to set up compared to an energy storage system with solar power. However, he was concerned about the recurring costs associated with a generator, such as fuel, manpower, maintenance, noise, and vibrations. Since he already had some knowledge about solar power, he decided to opt for an off-grid solar system.

The main benefits of an off-grid solar system include:

  • No recurring costs

  • No manpower required for operation

  • Minimal maintenance (only cleaning of PV modules)

  • Silent operation (no noise or vibrations)

Now, he is satisfied with our solar power solution.

From this customer’s experience, we hope you may also consider switching to an energy storage system. Simply put, energy storage solutions are a long-term investment. While the initial cost of a generator may be lower, its ongoing expenses make it costlier in the long run.

Major Differences Between Generators & Energy Storage

A generator consists of two major components – a diesel engine and an alternator. It is measured in kVA and typically comes in capacities such as 3kVA, 5kVA, 10kVA, 15kVA, 20kVA, 50kVA, 100kVA, 250kVA, and more. Generators can run at 75% of their rated capacity and consume approximately 4 to 5 liters of fuel per hour*. Since a generator has no storage capacity, the energy it produces must be used immediately while it is running.

An energy storage system also has two major components – an inverter and a battery. For larger capacities, a Power Conversion System (PCS) or rectifier is used to convert DC to AC and vice versa. It functions similarly to a UPS.

The battery used in energy storage systems is typically a high-voltage lithium-ion battery, which offers several advantages:

Unlike generators, energy storage systems can store electricity and supply power when needed. They can be charged using various sources such as grid power, generators, solar power, or any other electricity source.

How Can I Replace a Generator with an Energy Storage Solution?

  1. Calculate Your Power Consumption:

    • Determine how much power you need during an outage. If your building is operational, switch on all appliances and measure the load using a clamp meter.

    • If your building is under construction, prepare a list of appliances in an Excel sheet and analyze which ones you will need during power cuts.

  2. Decide How Long You Need Backup Power:

    • Identify the required backup duration (e.g., 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours, or more).

    • Energy storage or BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) solutions are usually configured for 2-hour or 4-hour backup duration.
